Chennai, Aug 6 (NationPress) Archana Sankara Narayanan, a prominent figure in India's freediving scene, has reached a remarkable milestone by shattering two national records at the Manado Apnea competition in Indonesia, held from August 1 to 3.
She achieved a depth of 38 metres in Constant Weight Bi-Fins (CWTB) and an impressive 40 metres in Constant Weight (CWT), making her the first Indian woman to surpass the 40-metre barrier in a competitive freediving event.
This accomplishment solidifies her status as India's deepest female freediver and elevates her total to an astounding 11 national titles.
The Manado event marked her third depth competition this year and her fifth overall.
"Reaching 40 metres is more than just a personal accomplishment – it paves the way for future generations of Indian women in freediving," she expressed.
Recently, Archana was designated as India’s inaugural Molchanovs ambassador, collaborating with the global leader in freediving education and gear.
Additionally, she became the first AIDA-certified judge in the country and is set to officiate at the Tulamben Pool Games in Bali from August 9 to 10.
Her influence in the sport has been acknowledged with the GP Birla Fellowship for Women Leaders, granted to women who are driving change in India.
"Freediving represents more than just my journey to greater depths – it’s about creating opportunities for others," she emphasized.
A former corporate lawyer, Archana prepared for the competition with a month of training in Amed, Bali, reconnecting with her first coach, Shubham Pandey, who introduced her to freediving two years ago.
She attributed her success to his mentorship, alongside support from Aussie freediver Brennan Hatton, coaches Sergei Busargin and Kaizen Freediving, Sophie from SuperHome, and the Apnea Bali team.
Archana was appointed by national record holder Luciana to serve as an AIDA judge, marking another milestone for India.
"It’s a privilege to represent my nation in this capacity," she stated.
With her achievements in both competitive and leadership roles, Archana is not only breaking records but also enhancing India's freediving community – pushing the sport to unprecedented depths, one breath at a time.
