Chandigarh, April 28 (NationPress) The sixth edition of the Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament -- 2025 is set to kick off on Tuesday at the Raghbir Singh Bhola Hockey Stadium, located at the No 3 Base Repair Depot (BRD), Air Force Station, Chandigarh.
This tournament, organized by the Air Force Sports Control Board (AFSCB), will run until May 6. Its purpose is to foster hockey and sporting excellence, honoring Marshal Arjan Singh's legacy and the Indian Air Force's commitment to developing talented athletes who contribute to the nation’s pride.
Air Marshal S. Sivakumar, Director General (Administration) at Air Headquarters, New Delhi, officially presented the tournament trophy. He highlighted that the Air Force Sports Control Board is dedicated to promoting the event, aiming to elevate its status within Indian hockey.
There is palpable excitement surrounding this tournament among the youth in India and the broader subcontinent, with hopes that the board's management will breathe new life into the rich tradition of Indian hockey.
Discussing the tournament's historical significance, he mentioned that the Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament was established in 2018 to pay tribute to the legendary Air Force figure, Marshal Arjan Singh, a devoted hockey player and an inspirational leader who exemplified leadership in both conflict and athletics.
Group Captain Y.S. Panghal, the Organising Secretary of the Hockey Tournament, shared that this year’s edition will feature 12 top teams, comprising 11 from India and one from Bangladesh, competing for the highly sought-after title in a league-cum-knockout format.
The teams participating include Chandigarh XI, Tata Naval Hockey Academy, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indian Railways, Indian Army, Indian Navy, Round Glass, Punjab and Sind Bank, Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala, Central Board of Direct Taxes, Indian Air Force, and the Bangladesh Air Force.
The tournament boasts an impressive prize pool, with the winners receiving Rs 3 lakh, the runners-up Rs 2 lakh, Rs 10,000 for the man of the match (for each match), and Rs 25,000 for the player of the tournament.
The opening ceremony will be graced by Air Marshal Vijay Kumar Garg, AOC-in-C, Maintenance Command, serving as the chief guest, while the closing ceremony on May 6 will be presided over by Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Chief of the Air Staff.
