  • Concerns over freedom of speech are mounting
  • Government's crackdown raises communal tensions

Guwahati, June 23 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Monday that the Assam Police have apprehended two additional individuals for their suspected involvement in disseminating offensive material targeting the Hindu faith across social media platforms.

The arrested individuals have been named as Anisur Rehman and Farijul Islam.

Rehman was detained in Tinsukia district while Islam was captured by law enforcement in the Nagaon district.

On the social media platform X, CM Sarma shared, "The crackdown on anti-Hindu elements is ongoing. @TinsukiaPolice has arrested Md Anisur Rehman for sharing objectionable content regarding Hinduism. @nagaonpolice arrested Farijul Islam for making derogatory comments about Lord Ram."

He further stated, "Currently, 97 anti-national and anti-Hindu individuals are in custody."

Among those arrested, the most notable is Aminul Islam, an MLA from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

He was the first individual detained in Assam for his "pro-Pakistan" remarks.

Aminul Islam, representing the Dhing Assembly constituency, was arrested on May 1 on charges of sedition following his inflammatory comments regarding the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities.

A video circulating on social media features the AIUDF leader asserting that the incidents in Pahalgam and Pulwama were part of a "government conspiracy".

Islam claimed, "Six years ago during the Pulwama incident, I stated that the RDX blast resulting in the death of 42 soldiers was orchestrated as part of a Central government conspiracy to influence the 2019 Lok Sabha elections."

He added that the BJP has been propagating that terrorists targeted only Hindus, sparing Muslims, yet the victims reported that the attackers did not inquire about anyone's identity before opening fire.

"If Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration fails to conduct a thorough investigation and seeks to create a rift between Hindus and Muslims, I would consider it a conspiracy," he concluded.

In contrast, AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal distanced the party from the comments made by their legislator.

Ajmal stated, "AIUDF supports the government. Terrorists have no religion, and those who propagate terrorism are against Islam."

Point of View

It's essential to consider the broader implications of such actions, ensuring that the rights of all communities are respected while addressing genuine concerns about hate speech.
