Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 1 (IANS) As the Crime Branch of Kerala Police initiates the process of recording testimonies from complainants regarding the allegations against Congress legislator Rahul Mamkootathil, who is facing several accusations of sexual harassment, support for him is gaining traction within his party.
The formal statement from advocate Shinto, one of the accusers, marks a significant milestone in the investigation.
The allegations first emerged last month through various media coverage and public disclosures.
In response, petitions were lodged at multiple police stations throughout Kerala, resulting in six formal complaints against the first-time MLA.
However, investigators have noted that the women involved have yet to file direct complaints, which are necessary for the cases to withstand legal examination.
The investigation team is also scrutinizing the credibility of audio evidence related to the allegations and intends to reach out to the individuals concerned for their statements.
According to the investigation unit, the inquiry can advance effectively only if the alleged victims come forward with official complaints and supporting evidence.
Simultaneously, protests calling for Mamkootathil's resignation continue to escalate.
In Palakkad, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of CPI-M, has intensified their protests.
Both the DYFI and the Bharatiya Janata Party have announced that Mamkootathil will be barred from entering the Assembly constituency until he resigns.
He achieved a notable victory in the Palakkad Assembly by-election last November.
The political response remains polarized.
Immediately after the allegations surfaced last month, the Congress leadership urged Mamkootathil to resign from his position as Kerala Youth Congress President.
Nonetheless, support for the troubled MLA is beginning to solidify within the party.
On Monday, United Democratic Front (UDF) Convenor Adoor Prakash stated, "Not a single complaint has been received directly, so what is the issue?"
Senior Congress figure and former Minister K.C. Joseph echoed this view, asserting that it is the responsibility of Assembly Speaker A.N. Shamseer to ensure that the Congress legislator can participate in the Assembly session, as "not a single case exists against him".
Veteran Congress leader K. Muraleedharan also supported Mamkootathil, arguing that since Treasury bench MLA Mukesh is already out on bail in a similar case, there should be "no restriction" on the Congress legislator attending the Assembly sessions.
As the investigation remains at its preliminary stage, with protests on the streets and political leaders rallying both in favor and against him, the case against Mamkootathil is rapidly becoming a litmus test for accountability and political integrity within Kerala's legislative landscape.
