Jaipur, Aug 11 (NationPress) The 86-year-old self-proclaimed guru, Asaram, who has been found guilty of rape and is currently serving a life sentence in Gujarat and Rajasthan, has once again been granted relief. The Rajasthan High Court, while reviewing his appeal submitted on August 8, has extended his interim bail until August 29.
This decision followed the presentation of medical reports to the court.
Advocate Nishant Borda, representing Asaram, submitted recent medical evaluations indicating a decline in his health.
Previously, the Gujarat High Court had also granted an extension of his interim bail on similar medical grounds, valid until August 29.
As per the Gujarat High Court's order, Asaram's troponin levels—a critical marker for heart damage—are worryingly elevated, indicating serious health risks. His physician has classified his condition as critical.
Currently, he is receiving treatment in the ICU of Jupiter Hospital in Indore. During the proceedings, Rajasthan High Court Justices Dinesh Mehta and Vineet Kumar Mathur mandated the formation of a panel of doctors at a government hospital in Ahmedabad.
This team will consist of two cardiologists tasked with conducting a thorough evaluation of Asaram's health, focusing particularly on his heart condition.
The court ordered the panel to meticulously review all health issues mentioned by Asaram, especially the heightened troponin levels, as they could threaten his heart health. The doctors are expected to provide a detailed report of their findings to the court for further review.
It's worth noting that the Gujarat High Court had previously extended Asaram's bail in a rape case until August 21 due to medical reasons.
The bench remarked that Asaram suffers from several age-related health issues and had experienced two heart attacks. "We are inclined to grant bail to the petitioner on medical grounds. The petitioner must not attempt to tamper with evidence and should avoid meeting his followers," the order specified.
Asaram is currently serving a life sentence at Jodhpur Central Jail.
In a bid for relief, Asaram has approached the Supreme Court, citing his deteriorating health and the necessity for advanced medical treatment.
He is also seeking the suspension of the life imprisonment sentence handed down by a trial court in a rape case in Gujarat.
