Jaipur, April 7 (NationPress) The Rajasthan High Court’s primary bench in Jodhpur is set to deliberate on the plea for the extension of Asaram’s interim bail today. Currently, Asaram is serving a life sentence for the sexual assault of a minor.
The case will be addressed by a division bench, which includes Justice Dinesh Mehta and Justice Vineet Kumar. The court's decision will revolve around the potential extension of the interim bail that was previously granted to Asaram.
In the previous hearing on April 2, the victim’s counsel, P.C. Solanki, raised allegations that Asaram had breached a Supreme Court order that forbade him from giving sermons while on interim bail. In reaction, the High Court instructed both parties to provide affidavits to clarify their respective stances. Asaram’s attorney is anticipated to submit his affidavit in court today.
Asaram had turned himself in at Jodhpur Central Jail on April 1 around 1:30 PM after his interim bail lapsed. However, later that evening, at approximately 11:30 PM, he was transferred to a private medical facility, Arogyaam. There has been no official communication regarding the reasons behind his hospitalization.
Previously, Asaram had received a three-month interim bail from the Gujarat High Court. After the Rajasthan High Court resumed operations following the Holi break, his lawyer, Nishant Borda, requested an urgent hearing on a pending application for bail extension.
A petition for permanent bail was also submitted to the Rajasthan High Court but was subsequently withdrawn due to low prospects of success. A new plea for the extension of interim bail was later filed. The High Court had instructed Asaram to initially approach the Gujarat High Court.
The hearing in Jodhpur was originally slated for March 27 but was postponed because the Gujarat High Court had not yet issued its verdict. In Gujarat, the hearing took place on March 25, and the ruling was reserved. On March 28, a divided decision emerged—one judge favored the bail while another opposed it. The matter was then escalated to a third judge, who ultimately ruled in favor of Asaram, resulting in a 2:1 decision granting him interim bail.
