Nilambur, June 12 (NationPress) The embattled Asha Workers, who have been staging an indefinite protest outside the State Secretariat since February 10 to demand equitable wages, launched a campaign on Thursday urging voters to reject the CPI-M candidate in the upcoming Nilambur Assembly bypolls in Kerala.
The Nilambur Assembly constituency is set to elect a new representative on June 19, following the resignation of a two-time sitting Left Independent legislator in January due to disagreements with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The Asha Workers expressed their discontent with CM Vijayan regarding the humiliation they have faced since the initiation of their indefinite protest, and on Thursday, they commenced their campaign against CPI-M candidate M. Swaraj.
“We are here to campaign against the CPI-M led Left government, which has failed to uphold the commitments made in its 2021 election manifesto concerning Asha Workers.
“The leaders of the CPI-M often claim to support women, yet their treatment of us when we voiced our legitimate demands for fair wages has been far from supportive. Our concerns remain unaddressed, and we have faced humiliation. Therefore, we are here to make our voices heard,” stated S. Mini, who is leading the protest.
“This election sees not only our workers campaigning but also numerous dissatisfied segments of society,” remarked Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath.
CPI-M leader M.V. Jayarajan swiftly criticized the Asha Workers' involvement in the campaign, asserting that their protest is orchestrated by the Socialist Unity Centre of India.
“The public is aware of their motives and agenda,” Jayarajan claimed.
In addition to Shoukath and Swaraj, Anvar is running as an Independent candidate, while the BJP is represented by Mohan George.
