Guwahati, June 4 (NationPress) In a pivotal initiative aimed at enhancing higher education and fostering industrial innovation, the Assam Cabinet has approved the creation of Kanaklata Barua University at the Bholaguri Tea Estate in Gohpur.
The Assam government is set to invest Rs 400 crore into this ambitious venture, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
Following a Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister informed the media that parts of the tea estate would need to be acquired for the university’s construction, which will necessitate the temporary relocation of some residents. He reassured that comprehensive rehabilitation and livelihood support programs are already in place.
“To facilitate the university's development, segments of the tea garden will be acquired, and some residents will be temporarily relocated. These individuals will receive alternate land nearby and be offered third and fourth-grade government positions to assist their livelihoods,” Sarma explained.
He further stated that affected individuals would also qualify for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS), and underscored that he had personally engaged with the tea garden community, who have shown “full support” for this initiative.
Once operational, Kanaklata Barua University will mark Assam’s first institution with a strong focus on industry-oriented education. The university will provide specialized programs in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and robotics.
“This institution will be a landmark for Assam—bridging academia with industrial needs. Experts from IIT Guwahati and Jawaharlal Nehru University are collaborating to develop the curriculum. Our vision is to position Assam as a center for advanced technological education and innovation,” stated the Chief Minister.
The state's education department is currently refining the university’s academic framework, aimed at equipping students for the ever-evolving industrial landscape while honoring the legacy of Kanaklata Barua, the renowned freedom fighter after whom the institution is named.
In a related development, the state cabinet has also approved the Chief Minister's Jiban Anuprerana Scheme for Research Scholars, aimed at providing one-time financial aid to eligible full-time research scholars, including those with disabilities, enrolled in public institutions across Assam.
According to CM Sarma, the government will provide a one-time financial assistance of Rs 25,000 for research scholars from Central/State Universities and Rs 40,000 for differently-abled researchers.
