Assam Chief Minister Accuses Congress Leaders of Plotting Unrest in Guwahati

Guwahati, Dec 20 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted on Friday that the Congress leaders have been "engaged in a conspiracy to incite unrest" in Guwahati.
He informed reporters, "I cannot pinpoint the exact motive, but I have observed that whether it’s Bhupen Borah, Ripun Borah, or any other members of the Congress party - they have been plotting to create turmoil in Guwahati, aiming to provoke the police into opening fire. I was affiliated with Congress for over two decades - yet, I have never witnessed such behavior during my time in that party."
CM Sarma also emphasized that no political faction should resort to protests and occupy the streets.
"I am of the opinion that political parties should refrain from street protests and instead channel their grievances through the electoral process. After elections, political leaders become MLAs and MPs and address the concerns of the populace accordingly," CM Sarma elaborated.
Importantly, thousands gathered for the final rites of the late Congress worker Mridul Islam in Assam's Kamrup district on Thursday. Locals in Islam’s hometown came together in large numbers to pay their respects to the deceased Congress leader.
One villager remarked, "It’s difficult to accept that Islam is no longer with us. He was a wonderful person, always ready to help. We will profoundly miss him."
The 45-year-old Islam passed away on Wednesday following his participation in a Congress protest march to Raj Bhawan in Guwahati.
The Congress party's state unit has filed a complaint against the local police, alleging that excessive use of teargas resulted in Islam’s death.
Islam was affiliated with the Congress party's State Congress Legal Cell.
Assam Congress General Secretary Bipul Gogoi claimed that the police indiscriminately deployed teargas, impacting everyone nearby, including the elderly, children, and those with respiratory issues.
Diganta Barah, the Commissioner of Police in Guwahati, dismissed the Congress's allegations, stating that the cause of Islam’s death remains undetermined.
