Crowds Assemble for Final Farewell of Late Congress Member in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 19 (NationPress) Thousands of people convened to pay their last respects to the late Congress party member Mridul Islam in Assam's Kamrup district on Thursday.

One villager expressed, "It is hard to accept that Mridul Islam has passed away. He was an exceptional individual who was always there to lend a hand when we needed it. His absence will be deeply felt."

The 45-year-old Mridul Islam lost his life on Wednesday after taking part in a Congress protest march directed towards Raj Bhawan in Guwahati. The Congress party has accused the police of using excessive teargas to disperse the protesters, which they claim led to Islam's premature demise.

The state chapter of the Congress party has filed a complaint against local law enforcement, asserting that the excessive deployment of teargas shells contributed to Islam's death.

Islam was affiliated with the Congress party's State Congress Legal Cell.

As per the state Congress, Islam was one of many protestors injured during police action.

Assam Congress General Secretary Bipul Gogoi stated that police indiscriminately fired teargas shells, impacting everyone in the area, including the elderly, children, and those with respiratory issues.

"It is evident that the actions of the Assam Police were directly responsible for Islam's tragic death. An FIR is being lodged to demand immediate and strict action against the police personnel involved in their excessive and unlawful use of force that resulted in the death of an innocent citizen," Gogoi stated in his complaint.

Diganta Barah, the Commissioner of Police in Guwahati, denied the allegations made by the Congress party, asserting that the cause of Islam's death has not yet been determined.

"It is premature to conclude the cause of death; however, it is true that he fell ill during the protest and died at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital while receiving treatment," Barah commented.
