Guwahati, Sep 28 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged for a cessation of political maneuvering in light of the recent and tragic passing of cultural icon Zubeen Garg. He emphasized that this sensitive issue should not be leveraged for personal or political gain, especially as the state grapples with profound sorrow.
In his address to the media, Chief Minister Sarma remarked that the entire state is mourning Garg's loss, and any effort to politicize the situation would only serve to aggravate the grief. "At a time when the people of Assam are emotionally affected, it is not appropriate to engage in politics. It is also not right for some individuals in Assam to use any incident as an opportunity to make their name 'popular' by doing certain things," he stated.
His remarks come as the investigation into Garg's death in Singapore on September 19 continues to attract significant public scrutiny and provoke numerous responses from various political and social factions.
As one of Assam's most cherished singers and actors for over three decades, Garg's demise has created a significant void in the state's cultural scene.
Chief Minister Sarma reiterated that the state government's commitment is to support the ongoing investigation into Garg's death.
He called on all parties to permit the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was formed earlier this week, to perform its duties impartially and transparently.
"Our responsibility is to ensure that the truth comes out. If any wrongdoing is found, justice will be delivered. But this should not be turned into a platform for political one-upmanship," he emphasized.
The SIT, led by M.P. Gupta, Special Director General of Police for Assam Police's CID, and Rosie Kalita, Senior Superintendent of Police (CM Vigilance), has been assigned to carry out a time-sensitive inquiry.
The state government has pledged full cooperation with authorities in Singapore and Garg's family to uncover the exact details surrounding his death.
As Assam reflects on the loss of one of its most luminous cultural figures, Chief Minister Sarma called for calmness, patience, and dignity in public discussions, reiterating that "Zubeen belongs to every Assamese heart, and his legacy must not be reduced to political point-scoring."
