Guwahati, Dec 19 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warmly greeted the people of Goa on the significant occasion of Goa Liberation Day, honoring the bravery and sacrifices of those who struggled to liberate the coastal state from colonial domination.

In a message shared on the social media platform X, CM Sarma expressed his heartfelt wishes to the “brothers and sisters of Goa,” emphasizing that this day serves as a reminder of the valor exhibited by the brave souls who restored Goa’s “rightful place in Bharat.”

He conveyed hope that the state would continue its trajectory of progress and development in the upcoming year.

Goa Liberation Day, celebrated every year on December 19, commemorates the historic events of 1961 when the Indian Armed Forces executed ‘Operation Vijay,’ successfully concluding over 450 years of Portuguese colonial rule.

Even though India gained independence in 1947, Goa, along with Daman and Diu, remained under Portuguese control for an extended period, with diplomatic efforts to integrate the region into the Indian Union proving futile.

The liberation of Goa signifies a pivotal moment in India’s post-independence history, showcasing the nation’s determination to complete its territorial unification.

‘Operation Vijay’ took less than 48 hours and involved a synchronized effort by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, culminating in the peaceful surrender of Portuguese forces on December 19, 1961. Goa was initially designated as a union territory and later achieved full statehood in 1987.

Across India, leaders and citizens observe this day by honoring the freedom fighters, soldiers, and civilians who contributed to Goa’s liberation.
