Guwahati, April 18 (NationPress) Heroin and highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, with a total worth of Rs 71 crore, were confiscated during two distinct operations in the Kamrup district of Assam on Friday, according to official sources.
Two drivers, operating vehicles carrying the illicit substances, were taken into custody as part of this operation.
An Assam police representative stated that following confidential information, the Special Task Force (STF) executed the operation in the Amingaon area, successfully intercepting a truck and a Hyundai car arriving from a bordering state.
Within the search operation, STF personnel seized 2,70,000 Yaba tablets, valued at Rs 67 crore, from the truck, while 520 grams of heroin, worth Rs 4 crore, was found in 40 soap boxes from the Hyundai car.
Both the methamphetamine tablets, known as Yaba or party tablets, and the heroin were reportedly smuggled from Myanmar. The drivers of the vehicles, identified as Nur Islam (34) and Nazrul Hussain alias Ali Hussain (22), were apprehended under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
The operation was overseen by STF chief Parthasarathi Mahanta, with assistance from Additional Superintendent of Police, STF, Kalyan Pathak.
Ongoing investigations and legal proceedings have been initiated, as stated by the police spokesperson.
Authorities suspect that the highly addictive methamphetamine tablets were trafficked from Myanmar and transported to Assam through a neighboring state, intended for illegal distribution to Bangladesh or other regions of the country.
Myanmar, sharing a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram—is a crucial transit location for narcotics, particularly heroin and methamphetamine tablets entering India. The Chin state of Myanmar serves as a hub for various drugs, wildlife trafficking, and other contraband through six districts of Mizoram: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
