Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) The nomination phase for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections wrapped up on Monday, with an impressive total of 1,388 nominations filed across 126 constituencies, signaling a vibrant electoral battle in the state, as per officials.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) reports that 817 candidates are now contesting in Assam after the nomination process concluded.
This state will participate in the initial voting phase on April 9, alongside Kerala and Puducherry.
“Assam has seen a notable influx of nominations, showcasing robust political engagement from various parties as well as independent candidates,” stated an election official, adding that the review of nomination documents is scheduled for March 24.
Officials indicated that the definitive roster of candidates will be available post the withdrawal deadline on March 26.
“The electoral process is advancing according to plan, and all necessary arrangements are established to facilitate effective scrutiny and the subsequent phases,” another official remarked.
In compliance with ECI regulations, all candidates must present affidavits that disclose their criminal history, assets, liabilities, educational background, and social media profiles along with their nomination papers.
“Transparency is a primary focus. Candidates with criminal records are mandated to disclose such information through newspapers and television on three separate occasions during the electoral campaign,” an official noted.
The relatively large number of nominations indicates multi-cornered contests in several constituencies, with major political entities and regional contenders preparing for a competitive election.
Polling in Assam is scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4, as per the overall electoral timetable released by the ECI.
With the nomination phase concluded, attention now shifts to the scrutiny process, withdrawals, and heightened campaigning throughout the state, officials added.
