Aizawl, Sep 27 (NationPress) In a remarkable operation on Saturday, the Assam Rifles successfully thwarted a smuggling attempt involving arms, drugs, tobacco products, and various other contrabands, apprehending three Myanmarese nationals in Mizoram, officials reported.
According to an official, the Assam Rifles acted on intelligence inputs and established a surprise vehicle checkpoint on the Tuipang–Zawngling road, located approximately 7 km from Tuipang village in Saiha District. The checkpoint flagged down three Kenbo motorcycles manufactured in China.
“What appeared to be ordinary travellers was far from it. Upon inspecting the motorcycles, our soldiers discovered an astonishing stash: 580 rounds of 12-gauge shotgun cartridges, six precision air rifles, an illuminated optical scope, and 15,000 rounds of air pellets,” stated the official.
In addition to the weaponry, the operation uncovered contraband items including areca nuts (known as Myanmarese betel nut), tobacco tins, locally brewed liquor, a slab of silicon carbide, and cash amounting to five lakh Kyat (the currency of Myanmar), revealing the extensive nature of cross-border smuggling that traverses the remote hills of Mizoram.
The three individuals on the motorcycles—Biehmo (28), Feithaisa (33), and Laibawi (37), all hailing from Chin state in Myanmar—were taken into custody at the scene.
The Assam Rifles subsequently transferred the detainees and the seized items to the Tuipang Police station for further legal proceedings.
Chin state in Myanmar serves as a significant hub for the smuggling of various drugs, endangered wildlife, and numerous other contrabands through six districts in Mizoram: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
Various drugs, particularly highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, heroin, arms and ammunition, explosives, and assorted contraband, are frequently trafficked through these six districts in Mizoram.
These districts share an unfenced border of 510 km with Myanmar, facilitating the illegal transport of drugs to other regions of the country and abroad, including Bangladesh, via Assam and Tripura.
