Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 15 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Sunday that several ambitious infrastructure projects initiated by his administration were initially ridiculed by the Congress, but are now being realized, highlighting a significant change in the state's development path.
Addressing the media in Nagaon, Sarma reminisced how the opposition mocked him when he discussed major connectivity initiatives, including the Kaziranga elevated corridor, tunnels, and utilizing highways as emergency landing strips for aircraft. "When I mentioned the Kaziranga elevated corridor, tunnels, and aircraft landing on highways in Moran, they laughed at me," the Chief Minister remarked, referring to the Congress.
He indicated that opposition leaders had dismissed his announcements as impractical, suggesting that "whatever the Chief Minister dreams at night, he says during the day." Defending his stance, Sarma emphasized that his government has steadily fulfilled its commitments, driving infrastructure development in Assam to an unparalleled level.
"Setting aside roads, this time I am asserting that aircraft will land on the Brahmaputra," he hinted at future transport and emergency response solutions being considered by the state. According to the Chief Minister, the Congress failed to conceptualize or execute large-scale infrastructure projects during its extensive governance in Assam, whereas the current government has emphasized bold planning and implementation.
Sarma noted that initiatives like the Kaziranga elevated corridor and the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) at Moran exemplify how Assam is gearing up for strategic, economic, and disaster-response challenges. He stated that innovative infrastructure is essential not only for connectivity but also for national security, tourism, and disaster management in a flood-prone region like Assam.
"Assam is no longer limited to conventional thinking. We are constructing infrastructure that aligns with global standards," he added. Sarma further remarked that the government's strategy has been to think ahead and act decisively, despite criticism. He mentioned that the people of Assam are now witnessing tangible changes, which he described as the government’s greatest validation.
The Chief Minister reiterated that development efforts would persist at an accelerated pace, asserting that Assam’s transformation narrative would be documented through results, not mere words.
