Guwahati, January 1 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared on Thursday that the state has experienced remarkable advancements in infrastructure development over the past five years. He also unveiled several upcoming initiatives designed to enhance connectivity, healthcare services, and urban infrastructure.
During a media briefing, CM Sarma revealed that four new bridges spanning the Brahmaputra River are currently under construction. He noted that the highly anticipated bridge linking Guwahati with North Guwahati is expected to be accessible to the public in February, a development that will significantly alleviate traffic congestion and bolster connectivity across the river.
Emphasizing key central projects, the Chief Minister mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone for the Kaziranga elevated corridor on either January 17 or 18. This project, stretching approximately 32 km and nearly 34 km in length, is estimated to cost around Rs 6,957 crore and is anticipated to play a vital role in improving traffic flow while safeguarding wildlife around the Kaziranga National Park.
Furthermore, CM Sarma announced that the Centre has granted approval for the ambitious Rs 22,000-crore twin-tube underwater tunnel project linking Gohpur and Numaligarh. This tunnel is set to operate as a combined road-and-rail corridor, expected to become a landmark engineering feat in the Northeast, significantly reducing travel time across the Brahmaputra.
In another significant enhancement to rail connectivity, CM Sarma stated that the Prime Minister is anticipated to lay the foundation stone for the proposed Gelephu railway line project in February, further advancing regional and cross-border connectivity.
Addressing urban development, CM Sarma mentioned plans for constructing an elevated corridor near the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.
Additionally, he revealed the development of an Aerocity project covering 60 acres in the airport vicinity to foster commercial and aviation-related activities.
In terms of healthcare advancements, the Chief Minister announced a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the Asian Development Bank for the establishment of a new state-of-the-art hospital at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. This Rs 2,200-crore project will involve the demolition of the current structure to create a modern medical facility.
Moreover, the CM stated that the state government is poised to inaugurate the 120 MW Kopili hydroelectric project soon, marking a crucial step in enhancing Assam's power infrastructure. 'These initiatives reflect the scale and seriousness of the work undertaken over the past five years and our dedication to transforming Assam's infrastructure landscape,' the Chief Minister emphasized.
