Assam CM Discusses Underwater Tunnel Project with Union Minister Gadkari

New Delhi/Guwahati, Dec 3 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held an important meeting on Tuesday with Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in the national capital to deliberate on the start of construction for an underwater tunnel in the Brahmaputra River.
The proposed initiative aims to link Gohpur and Numaligarh across the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra.
Sarma emphasized that the central government has provided substantial support for this ambitious endeavor in the state.
In a post on X, he expressed his satisfaction: “I am delighted to announce that I just finished a productive meeting with Hon’ble Union Minister Shri nitin_gadkari Ji. I am genuinely impressed by the consistent support from MORTHIndia in fast-tracking priority infrastructure projects in Assam, ensuring their timely completion.”
The Chief Minister revealed that the construction of the underwater tunnel connecting Gohpur and Numaligarh in the Brahmaputra will begin promptly alongside two other significant projects: the Guwahati Ring Road and Kaziranga Elevated Corridor.
Additionally, the meeting included discussions regarding the national highway development between Jorhat and Dibrugarh.
“We reviewed the double laning of the Baihata Chariali to Mission Chariali highway. A thorough assessment of ongoing projects under NHAI_Official, nhidcl, and MORTHIndia throughout the state was also conducted. We are united in our commitment to enhance Assam’s infrastructure and unlock its vast potential,” the Chief Minister stated.
Earlier, Sarma indicated, “We plan to construct an underwater tunnel between Gohpur and Numaligarh through the Brahmaputra, with an estimated cost of approximately 6,000 crore.”
He noted that the tunnel will accommodate both rail and vehicular movement.
“Once constructed, this tunnel will further enhance connectivity between the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra River,” he added.
“I once envisioned creating such an underwater tunnel in Assam, though I questioned its feasibility. Now, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi giving the green light, it is set to become a reality,” the Chief Minister remarked.
He also mentioned that the state government is exploring the most suitable locations for the underwater tunnel, ultimately selecting Gohpur and Numaligarh for its construction.
