Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday, 18 July unveiled a ₹17,235 crore infrastructure expansion plan, describing it as one of the most ambitious road connectivity overhauls the state has undertaken. The package covers three flagship projects — a highway four-laning, an elevated airport corridor in Guwahati, and a new bridge over the Brahmaputra — designed to ease chronic congestion and unlock economic movement across Assam.

Key Projects in the Package

The infrastructure programme comprises three distinct components. First, the four-laning of the Baihata Chariali–Mission Chariali highway stretch, which is expected to significantly improve traffic flow toward northern and upper Assam. Second, the construction of the Guwahati Airport–Jalukbari Elevated Corridor, aimed at decongesting one of the state capital's busiest arterial routes and improving access to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Third, a new bridge across the Brahmaputra connecting Morigaon and Darrang districts, offering an additional crossing between the northern and southern banks of the river.

'With a planned investment of ₹17,235 crore, we are driving one of the most ambitious connectivity overhauls in Assam till date,' Chief Minister Sarma said while announcing the projects via a post on X. He added that the upgraded network would ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and improve the movement of people and goods across the state.

Why the Brahmaputra Bridge Matters

The proposed Morigaon–Darrang bridge is particularly significant. The Brahmaputra remains one of the widest and most difficult-to-bridge rivers in South Asia, and existing crossings are heavily strained. A new link between the two districts would provide commuters and freight carriers an alternative route, reducing dependence on existing bottlenecks. This comes amid a broader national push to expand Northeast India's road and rail connectivity, with the Centre having committed substantial funds to the region under successive infrastructure budgets.

The announcement is part of Assam's wider strategy to attract investment and boost trade by modernising its transport backbone. Notably, improved airport access via the Jalukbari elevated corridor could also support the state's growing aviation traffic, as Guwahati has emerged as the primary gateway to the Northeast. The four-laning of the Baihata Chariali–Mission Chariali stretch further addresses a long-standing demand from business communities in upper Assam who have cited poor road quality as a constraint on commerce.
