Could the CPI-M Handle the Shock of Ayisha Potty Joining Congress?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 13 (NationPress) In a significant political blow to the ruling CPI-M in Kerala, three-time former party MLA Ayisha Potty officially joined the Congress on Tuesday, sending tremors through the Left establishment and providing a morale boost to the Opposition ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
A trained lawyer, Potty served the Kottarakara Assembly constituency for three consecutive terms starting in 2006, establishing herself as a formidable grassroots leader.
Her political journey took a dramatic turn in 2021 when she was denied a ticket by the CPI-M, reportedly due to a deteriorating relationship with the party leadership, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The rift widened when she was eased out of her grassroots organizational responsibilities, effectively sidelining her within the party.
The first sign of Potty's political shift emerged when she unexpectedly appeared at a memorial meeting for former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, a Congress stalwart she had openly respected.
This appearance sparked speculation, which was confirmed on Tuesday.
Earlier that day, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan hinted at "major surprises" ahead.
Within an hour, he was seen escorting Potty to the forefront of a Congress protest outside the Lok Bhavan.
Satheesan announced that state Congress President Sunny Joseph would formally welcome her into the party.
Potty was later invited to speak at the gathering, which included Congress General Secretaries K.C. Venugopal and Deepa Das Munshi, along with senior state leaders.
In an emotional yet resolute address, she stated that she was prepared for personal attacks on social media following her decision.
"I know I will face criticism in the coming days, but I am unafraid. I was given opportunities by the party I belonged to, and I acknowledge that. I will not comment on my experiences there. I assure you all that I will always stand with the people," she declared.
Potty first gained prominence in 2006 when she shocked Kerala's political landscape by defeating veteran leader R. Balakrishnan Pillai, earning the title of "giant killer".
Veteran Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh humorously noted that the Congress had long tried to defeat her at the polls, "but never succeeded — now we won’t have to".
Her entry is anticipated to alter political dynamics in central and southern Kerala, heightening the CPI-M’s concerns about internal erosion.
