Why Was a Bangladeshi Trawler Seized by the Coast Guard?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 16 (NationPress) The Indian Coast Guard has seized a Bangladeshi fishing trawler, detaining 28 Bangladeshi fishermen for illegally entering Indian waters, breaching maritime boundaries.
The Coast Guard transported both the trawler and the fishermen to Fraserganj Fisheries Port in the South 24 Parganas district on Monday afternoon.
While patrolling on Monday morning, Coast Guard personnel identified a suspicious vessel operating within Indian waters of the Bay of Bengal. The crew was commanded to halt, and upon inspection, it was confirmed as the Bangladeshi trawler named 'Sagar 3'.
After the seizure, officials initiated preliminary questioning of the fishermen, during which numerous inconsistencies surfaced in their accounts. They failed to provide adequate explanations for their presence in Indian waters.
In addition to detaining the fishermen, the Coast Guard seized the trawler and brought it ashore. The fishermen were subsequently handed over to the Fraserganj Coastal Police Station, where they were formally arrested. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the intrusion.
Biswa Chand Thakur, the Superintendent of Police for the Sundarbans Police District, stated, "The arrestees are being interrogated to determine if this incident is part of a broader infiltration operation. Investigations are also ongoing to see if there have been past attempts to breach Indian waters."
He mentioned that surveillance along the India-Bangladesh maritime border has been intensified.
Initial questioning revealed that some detainees alleged a scheme to bring a Bangladeshi national, Rabindranath Das, into Indian territory under the guise of fishing.
It appears he was being smuggled across the border on the trawler when the Coast Guard, conducting its routine patrol, spotted the vessel and executed a raid.
