Vadodara, May 19 (NationPress) Gujarat's Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel announced on Monday that an increasing number of farmers in the state are adopting apiculture as a lucrative secondary venture, bolstered by significant support from both state and central government initiatives.
As we approach World Bee Day on May 20, the minister emphasized that Gujarat's sweet revolution is gaining traction, with over Rs 87.6 crore allocated to beekeeping farmers through various programs.
“Bee-keeping is evolving from a mere side activity to a substantial source of farmers’ prosperity,” Patel stated.
“Minimal investment with high returns is enabling farmers to produce honey while simultaneously enhancing the yields of horticultural crops through effective pollination,” he elaborated.
According to the minister, the Mission Madhumakhi initiative, launched during 2022-23, has provided technical and financial assistance to 284 members of Amul Dairy and 500 members of Banas Dairy.
“Beneficiaries have been equipped with essential tools such as bee hives, honey extractors, food-grade containers, and processing and cold storage units, receiving over Rs 307 lakh in support,” he added.
Additionally, the government is focusing on including tribal communities, as this year, more than 5,300 farmers from 53 tribal talukas will receive two bee boxes each at no cost to initiate their journey in apiculture.
This scheme is designed to generate new sources of income and create job opportunities in underserved areas. The Agriculture Department reported that over 11,300 farmers in the state have undergone hands-on training in modern bee-keeping techniques.
Financial aid so far includes Rs 418 lakh for establishing bee colonies, Rs 415 lakh for hive acquisitions, Rs 33 lakh for honey extractors, and Rs 9 lakh for bee-breeding units.
The state government is also conducting awareness programs and seminars in districts like Aravalli, Rajkot, Surendranagar, and Valsad. These initiatives aim to inform the public about the crucial role of pollinators in food production and ecosystem health on May 20.
“Bee-keeping is crucial for not just enhancing rural incomes but also for conserving our biodiversity. Gujarat is spearheading this quiet yet impactful revolution—one hive at a time,” the minister concluded.
