Kolkata, Dec 25 (NationPress) The Rajganj Block Development Officer (BDO), Prashant Barman, has approached the Supreme Court to contest the Calcutta High Court's ruling that revoked his anticipatory bail regarding the murder case of a gold trader in the Duttabad locality of Salt Lake.
On Monday, the Calcutta High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail request, which had previously been granted by a subordinate court, and mandated his surrender within 72 hours.
Sources indicate that Barman filed his challenge in the Supreme Court the following day.
The Supreme Court is presently on its Christmas recess, resuming operations on January 5; however, a vacation bench will be accessible during this time.
Today marks the expiration of the High Court's deadline for Prashant Barman to surrender. This appeal to the Supreme Court is anticipated to add a new dimension to the case surrounding the abduction and murder of the gold trader in Duttabad.
The family of the victim, Swapan Kamilya, lodged a complaint against Barman.
During the investigation, authorities gathered various pieces of evidence that suggested Barman’s involvement. Several associates of the BDO were apprehended.
Despite this, law enforcement encountered significant challenges in detaining the Rajganj BDO. In the previous month, Prashant Barman sought anticipatory bail in the Barasat court, firmly denying all allegations.
The subordinate court approved his application, and he subsequently appeared before the Bidhannagar Sub-divisional court to finalize his bail.
Subsequently, Bidhannagar Police appealed to the Calcutta High Court, contesting the subordinate court's decision and seeking to annul the anticipatory bail granted to the accused BDO.
During the proceedings, the Calcutta High Court heavily criticized the ruling of the lower court, emphasizing that it had neglected to assess critical factors necessary when granting bail or anticipatory bail in a murder case. The High Court deemed that the lower court had issued bail while overlooking serious and vital evidence.
