Kolkata, Feb 19 (NationPress) The West Bengal BJP has formally requested Governor C.V. Ananda Bose to remove Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comments regarding ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ from the Assembly records. They also seek his intervention to revoke the suspension of four party legislators, including the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari.
On Wednesday, the state BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar sent two distinct letters to the Governor.
In the correspondence concerning the Chief Minister’s ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ statements, Majumdar emphasized the need for elected officials to maintain respect for religious sentiments and to avoid remarks that could lead to societal division.
“With this letter, I request you to remove the statement from the Vidhan Sabha record, consider the matter seriously, and seek a public apology from the Hon’ble Chief Minister,” the letter states.
Majumdar asserted that the Chief Minister’s ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ remarks have disrespected the feelings of the countless devotees who participate in the Maha Kumbh with deep reverence.
“It is regrettable that someone in such a prominent constitutional role would make remarks that not only disrespect religious traditions but also foster unnecessary social division,” Majumdar added.
In another letter, he expressed that the suspension of the four BJP legislators, including the LoP, raises significant concerns regarding the fair representation of the populace and the democratic operations of the assembly.
“While I completely recognize the necessity of preserving decorum and discipline within the House, I believe re-evaluating this decision would promote a spirit of constructive dialogue and uphold the democratic values of our legislature,” he stated.
He noted that the absence of these MLAs deprives their constituents of representation and limits diverse viewpoints in legislative discussions.
“This has become a concerning trend, as the Speaker frequently suspends MLAs who articulate the concerns of the people of West Bengal,” he remarked.
