Kolkata, June 2 (NationPress) During a significant meeting on Monday, the West Bengal Cabinet sanctioned a proposal to establish a new sub-division in the commonly sensitive Murshidabad district.
The Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, announced this initiative on May 6 while visiting areas in the district that suffered from communal violence in April, which erupted due to protests against the recently introduced Waqf (Amendment) Act.
On Monday, the Cabinet formally approved the proposal.
This new sub-division will be formed from three regions: Suti (Block-1 and Block-II), Farakka, and Dhuliyan, all of which are currently part of the Jangipur sub-division in Murshidabad.
Notably, Suti, Farakka, and Dhuliyan were among the areas most impacted by the April communal unrest.
With the addition of this new subdivision, the total number of subdivisions in Murshidabad district will rise to six.
During recent visits, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress, blaming them for the ongoing communal violence in Murshidabad until central armed police forces (CAPF) were deployed following a Calcutta High Court order.
They referred to a report from a probe committee appointed by the Calcutta High Court, which implicated a Trinamool Congress MLA and a ruling party councillor in overseeing the communal violence.
In contrast, the Chief Minister argued that the unrest in Murshidabad was orchestrated by the BJP, claiming she possesses evidence to support her assertions, which she plans to disclose at an appropriate time.
