Kolkata, Aug 12 (NationPress) Amidst the escalating conflict between the West Bengal government and the Election Commission of India (ECI), an emergency meeting of the state Cabinet has been scheduled for August 18 to address the challenges stemming from the current situation.
The announcement for the Cabinet meeting on August 18 came shortly after it was revealed that the ECI has summoned Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to its headquarters in New Delhi by 5 p.m. on Wednesday regarding the suspension of four election officers.
Many insiders have expressed surprise that this meeting is taking place merely seven days after the last one on August 11.
Typically, the interval between two Cabinet meetings ranges from 10 to 14 days, unless there is an urgent matter to discuss.
Sources within the State Secretariat indicate that this upcoming meeting is expected to tackle the complications arising from the ongoing dispute with the ECI, not only concerning the suspension of the four election officers but also regarding other pressing matters, particularly the special intensive revision proposed by the commission.
"We anticipate that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will make significant decisions on these issues at the Cabinet meeting on August 18, which is why it has been convened in such quick succession," shared a Cabinet member who wished to remain anonymous.
On August 8, the ECI had sent a follow-up to Pant, requesting a compliance report on the commission's previous directive to suspend the four election officers, urging the Trinamool Congress government to submit this report by the upcoming Monday.
However, on that Monday, the Chief Secretary communicated to the commission that the state government had not yet taken any disciplinary measures against the four election officers as directed, and had only reassigned them from election duties.
Following that, Chief Secretary Pant is scheduled to report to the ECI's headquarters in New Delhi by 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
A source from the State Secretariat confirmed that the Chief Secretary will indeed be at the ECI's headquarters in New Delhi by 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
