Kolkata, January 11 (NationPress) - The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her sorrow on Sunday regarding the passing of Prashant Tamang, the acclaimed winner of Indian Idol 3 and a beloved figure from Darjeeling, who succumbed to a cardiac arrest in Delhi.
Tamang, aged 43, gained popularity after triumphing in the third season of Indian Idol in 2007 and was later admitted to Dwarka hospital in New Delhi, where he was declared dead.
Upon the announcement of his death, Chief Minister Banerjee conveyed her heartfelt condolences.
"I am deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected passing of Prashant Tamang, the renowned singer from Indian Idol and a cherished artist. His ties to the hills of Darjeeling and his previous connection with the Kolkata Police made him especially dear to us in Bengal. I extend my sympathies to his family, friends, and numerous admirers," Chief Minister Banerjee shared on her official X account.
The BJP's MP from Darjeeling, Raju Bista, also expressed his condolences, stating, "The untimely passing of Prashant Tamang has left the Gorkha community and the broader arts and music world in shock and sorrow."
Born on December 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, Tamang first showcased his musical talent as a Constable in the Kolkata Police, where he performed with an orchestra.
His fame skyrocketed in 2007 when he won the singer reality show Indian Idol.
Tamang made his acting debut in the 2010 Nepali blockbuster 'Gorkha Paltan', while also contributing as a playback singer.
