Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 23 (NationPress) The passing of distinguished politician and her former right-hand man in the Trinamool Congress has left West Bengal Chief Minister and party leader Mamata Banerjee profoundly devastated, she expressed on Monday morning.
In a heartfelt message shared on her social media platform, Banerjee characterized Roy as her former “comrade-in-arms”.
“I am utterly shocked and saddened by the unexpected news of Mukul Roy's passing. He was not just a political associate but a dedicated comrade in various political battles. This news has truly broken my heart,” the Chief Minister conveyed in her post.
Banerjee noted that Roy committed his life to the Trinamool Congress from its very beginning. Interestingly, he was among the first nine leaders to approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) to establish the Trinamool Congress, which Mamata Banerjee founded after her departure from the Congress party in the late nineties.
“He held the position of Union Minister and was well-respected within all ranks of the party. Although he ventured onto a different path, he eventually returned. His influence on Bengal's political landscape and his organizational skills will never be forgotten. His absence will be felt across all political factions,” Banerjee further remarked.
“I extend my sincere condolences to his family and followers. To Shubhranshu, I say: Be strong; we stand by you in this difficult time,” she added.
Shubhranshu is Roy’s son, who is also a politician and a former Trinamool Congress legislator.
Roy passed away shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Monday, as confirmed by Subhranshu Roy.
He had been undergoing treatment for several health issues for an extended period and was reportedly unresponsive to medical care, according to close associates.
In 2017, he joined the BJP and successfully contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections from the Krishnanagar (Uttar) constituency in the Nadia district. However, he rejoined the Trinamool Congress shortly after the election results were announced.
While he officially remained a BJP legislator, his true allegiance was with Trinamool Congress.
