In his condolence message shared on his official X account, the Prime Minister also posted a nostalgic photograph of himself with Roy from the period when Roy was associated with the BJP from 2017 to 2021.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of former Union Minister Shri Mukul Roy Ji. His profound political experience and dedication to serving society will not be forgotten. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister conveyed.
Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and Lok Sabha member, acknowledged Roy's significant role as a foundational figure in the Trinamool Congress.
“The passing of Mukul Roy signifies the conclusion of an era in Bengal’s political landscape. His vast experience and contributions were pivotal in shaping a critical phase of the state’s political and public history. As one of the founding members of the All India Trinamool Congress, he played a vital role in the growth and consolidation of the party during its early years. His commitment to public service will always be remembered with respect. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and supporters. May his soul rest in peace,” Banerjee stated.
Similarly, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and a former key leader in the Trinamool Congress, expressed his condolences over Roy’s death.
“I am profoundly saddened to hear of the demise of Senior Politician, Shri Mukul Roy. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. I pray that his soul finds eternal peace. Om Shanti,” Adhikari wrote on his social media.
Additionally, Satarup Ghosh, a leader of the Youth CPI(M) and member of the party's state committee, shared a condolence message, reminding everyone of Roy’s honesty in recognizing the close ties between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP in West Bengal.
The senior politician, Mukul Roy, who previously held the position of Union Railway Minister, passed away early Monday morning at a private hospital in Kolkata at the age of 73.
Roy's son, Subhranshu Roy, confirmed that his father passed away shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Monday. He had been undergoing treatment for various medical issues and had not been responding to the care provided, as reported by close associates.
Roy was a key figure in the Trinamool Congress, serving as the party’s General Secretary and being one of the closest aides to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He was among the first nine leaders who approached the Election Commission of India to establish a new political entity—the Trinamool Congress—in the late 1990s, after Banerjee separated from Congress.
