Kolkata, Oct 6 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Monday, dismissed the assertions made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week regarding fatalities in the hills of Darjeeling in northern West Bengal as a result of a bridge collapsing after landslides.
"I am deeply saddened by the reported loss of lives in the bridge incident in Darjeeling. My heartfelt condolences go out to those grieving their loved ones. I hope for a swift recovery for the injured. Given the heavy rainfall and landslides, we are vigilantly monitoring the situation in Darjeeling and its vicinity, and we are dedicated to extending all possible support to those impacted," PM Modi expressed in a social media post on Sunday.
However, on Monday, after assessing flood and landslide-impacted areas in north Bengal, Chief Minister Banerjee contradicted the Prime Minister’s claims, asserting that there had been no casualties linked to the bridge collapse in Darjeeling.
"There were no fatalities due to the bridge collapse. Incorrect information was conveyed. The bridges that fell due to the landslides were minor structures. We will need to reconstruct them," CM Banerjee stated.
Additionally, the Chief Minister reiterated the call for establishing an India-Bhutan River Commission, similar to the existing India-Bangladesh River Commission.
"I have brought this demand up previously as well. I even reached out to the Prime Minister regarding this issue, yet received no response," CM Banerjee noted.
As per the Chief Minister, sudden water releases from Bhutan can adversely affect certain districts in north Bengal.
Furthermore, Chief Minister Banerjee attributed the flooding in north Bengal to a hydropower project in neighboring Sikkim.
"Both Bhutan and Sikkim significantly contribute to the floods in north Bengal. Moreover, there has been excessive rainfall over a short timeframe. The Union government does not allocate any funds for flood management," claimed the Chief Minister.
