Kolkata, Oct 7 (NationPress) The Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, made a visit to the landslide-stricken region of Mirik in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal on Tuesday to evaluate the situation and the ongoing relief efforts.
He was joined by Darjeeling BJP MP Raju Bista and Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.
Reports indicate that the central minister's trip to North Bengal, which faced devastating landslides due to heavy rainfall resulting in at least 36 fatalities, highlights the Centre's dedication to assisting the local populace during this challenging time.
While surveying the flood-impacted locations, Rijiju remarked, "The situation is dire, and numerous lives have been lost. Immediate relief is our top priority at this moment. We're here to assess the overall situation. Significant damage has been inflicted, and many lives have been lost due to the floods and landslides. We are conducting a thorough assessment, and collaboration between the state and central government is essential."
Furthermore, Rijiju stated that he represented Prime Minister Narendra Modi during this visit and would compile a report for the government regarding the circumstances.
"It is critical to provide assistance to the families who have suffered losses of both loved ones and their homes. The central government, state governments, local authorities, and teams from NDRF, SSB, and other agencies need to collaborate effectively. On behalf of the PM, I am here for a two-day visit and have spoken to the affected individuals. I will report the situation back to the government," he added.
The death toll resulting from severe rainfall and landslides across the hills, Terai, and Dooars regions of North Bengal reached 36 as of Tuesday morning, according to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and district authorities in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri.
As weather conditions improved since Monday morning, notable advancements were made in relief and rescue operations. Several displaced individuals were relocated to safer areas, and tourists were evacuated from the affected regions.
