Kolkata, Feb 5 (NationPress) The West Bengal government has announced an increase of Rs 500 in the monthly payments under the 'Lakshmir Bhandar' scheme, as proposed in the interim (vote-on-account) Budget for the financial year 2026-27. This proposal was presented on the floor of the House by Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya on Thursday.
At present, women belonging to the general category receive Rs 1,000 monthly, while those in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories receive Rs 1,200.
With the new budget proposal, the payment for women in the general category will rise to Rs 1,500, while those in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories will receive Rs 1,700.
A total allocation of Rs 15,000 crore has been set aside for the 'Lakshmir Bhandar' project in this interim budget.
Additionally, Bhattacharya raised the dearness allowance for state government employees and pensioners by 4%.
A new initiative, 'Banglar Yuva Sathi', was also announced in the interim budget. This project is expected to commence on August 15 this year, contingent on the party's success in the upcoming Assembly elections. It will provide a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 to youths aged between 21 and 40 who have passed their secondary examinations.
Moreover, the payments for civic volunteers and green police personnel will be increased by Rs 1,000 each month, with a budget allocation of Rs 150 crore for this purpose. The 'Shiksha Bandhus', grassroots workers in the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme, will also receive a Rs 1,000 hike.
The state is set to implement the Seventh Pay Commission.
The interim budget totals Rs 4,600 crore, with the complete state budget for 2026-27 to be presented by the incoming cabinet after the forthcoming Assembly elections.
