Kolkata, May 12 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has recently alleged that the state police are engaging in the selective harassment and detention of Hindu youths in the Murshidabad district.
He claimed that this pattern of harassment began following a two-day visit from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier this month.
According to him, the police are exploiting the shift in media focus from Murshidabad to the ongoing national circumstances amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, making Hindu youths in the area their targets.
Last month, Murshidabad experienced significant unrest due to communal tensions, particularly after protests against the newly enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act escalated into violence.
During this turmoil, several Hindu temples were vandalized, and properties and businesses belonging to Hindu families were damaged.
“Initially, the Chief Minister avoided Murshidabad while it was facing communal unrest. Instead, she was occupied with the inauguration of a cultural center at Digha. When she finally visited, she did not go to the areas most impacted by the violence. Additionally, she made comments targeting a monk from the Bharat Sevashram Sangha. Following her return, police began their atrocities, focusing on Hindu youths,” stated the West Bengal LoP.
Adhikari announced that the BJP's state legal cell would provide comprehensive legal assistance to the Hindu youths in Murshidabad who are encountering unwarranted police harassment.
“If such selective oppression does not cease immediately, we will initiate a significant protest in Murshidabad. We will not permit the oppression of Hindus for political appeasement,” he asserted.
