West Bengal Transport Department Updates Bus Rental Rates for Election Duties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 23 (NationPress) The Transport Department has officially informed the Election Commission about the updated rental prices for buses and vehicles designated for election duties.
Soumitra Mohan, the Principal Secretary of the Transport Department, presented the newly revised rate list to the Election Commission on Monday, showcasing a notable increase when compared to earlier years. This correspondence was directed to the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and included detailed vehicle rental costs along with additional terms and conditions.
The rental prices for buses—regardless of their passenger capacity—allocated for election tasks in other states are significantly higher than those established in West Bengal.
Consequently, private route bus operators in the state had previously indicated that they would withhold their vehicles unless the elevated rates were approved, putting the Transport Department in a challenging predicament.
The Election Commission had persistently requested updates from the Transport Department regarding the availability of vehicles. In the meantime, private bus owners maintained their position, stating they would not release their vehicles until the rental rates were adjusted. After several discussions, the Transport Department has now officially relayed the revised rental rates to the Chief Electoral Officer via a formal letter.
Rahul Chatterjee, General Secretary of the All Bengal Bus-Minibus Coordination Committee, stated that buses and vehicles are requisitioned for election tasks annually; however, the rental rates in West Bengal have historically been substantially lower than those in other states. Previously, the rental fee for a bus was set at Rs 2,530, with each crew member receiving a daily allowance of Rs 250.
In light of this, he remarked, “We have requested a 10 percent increase to encompass both the bus rental fees and the daily allowances for the crew members. This matter was initially communicated to the Transport Department in October of last year, and we have now formally presented this appeal to the Election Commission.”
