New Delhi, Oct 14 (NationPress) The BJP criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday regarding the shocking Durgapur gang-rape incident, expressing that it is profoundly regrettable that West Bengal is devolving into a jungle of cruelty and crime, dominated by those who commit such horrific acts.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi remarked to IANS, “It is regrettable to assert that West Bengal is transforming into a jungle of cruelty and crime, governed by the perpetrators of these heinous acts. The esteem that the state once held nationally and globally is now being tarnished by these occurrences. It’s truly disheartening. The administration is shielding those who are robbing the state of its dignity.”
BJP member Agnimitra Paul also condemned the government, questioning, “Where is the police protection? CM Mamata has previously asked, ‘Why did you go out after 12?’ Even if someone steps out at 6 a.m., she will inquire about it. If women venture out at 2 p.m., they will still interrogate their actions. The reality is, the victim left her home at 8 p.m. to buy food, not at midnight. And even if she had gone out at 12, why shouldn’t she have the freedom to do so?”
“Prime Minister Modi advocates for women’s empowerment and prioritizes women’s safety. Currently, the armed forces are engaged in Operation Sindoor. It saddens me to claim that I hail from West Bengal. There are no street lights near the college, no CCTV systems in place, and a forest in proximity—yet the authorities are not taking any necessary steps,” she added.
Police have reported that the Durgapur gang-rape victim is set to give her statement to a judicial magistrate under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) later today. This confidential statement will be documented at the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Court.
The victim's father mentioned on Monday their intention to return their daughter to Odisha following her statement. However, it is uncertain if the medical student will be going back to Odisha later today or on Wednesday.
Earlier today, law enforcement transported the five suspects to the wooded area for a reconstruction of the crime. Sources indicated that the clothing worn by the accused during the incident has been confiscated and forwarded for forensic analysis. Additionally, the medico-legal examination of the suspects is anticipated to take place either later today or on Wednesday.
