Did the Union Budget 2026–27 Really Boost Bengaluru’s Infrastructure & Mobility?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 2 (NationPress) R Ashoka, the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, stated on Monday that the Union Budget 2026–27 has provided a significant enhancement to Bengaluru's infrastructure and mobility. He dismissed the opposition's allegations that the southern state was shortchanged in terms of funding and projects.
The senior BJP leader emphasized that the Union Budget 2026-27 reinforces the Modi government's commitment to the city's growth and the Ease of Living for Bengaluru's residents.
With allocations exceeding Rs 2,000 crore for Namma Metro, Rs 500 crore for the Suburban Rail Project, Rs 1,500 crore for PM E-Drive, and Rs 500 crore for PM eBus Sewa, Bengaluru is poised for a transformative evolution in public transport, eco-friendly mobility, and urban expansion,” Ashoka highlighted.
This landmark funding will alleviate traffic congestion, improve last-mile connectivity, decrease pollution levels, and significantly enhance the quality of life for the residents of Bengaluru. It stands as a testament to visionary planning, fiscal responsibility, and governance that prioritizes the populace, he noted.
Ashoka further asserted that, under the proactive leadership of PM Narendra Modi, Bengaluru continues to receive its fair share of development and investment. Namma Bengaluru is progressing - more swiftly, sustainably, and robustly, Ashoka emphasized.
According to the new 16th Finance Commission formula, Karnataka’s share in the Centre’s tax devolution has risen from 3.65 percent to 4.13 percent for the period of 2026–31. In tangible terms, while the 15th Finance Commission allocated Rs 55,663 crore, the 16th Finance Commission will provide Rs 63,050 crore, resulting in a net gain of Rs 7,387 crore,” Ashoka explained.
This positions Karnataka as the top gainer nationally. However, he criticized the Congress government in Karnataka for playing the victim and falsely accusing the Centre of negligence.
If Karnataka is truly being discriminated against, he questioned why its share has increased so significantly and why it is the number one gainer in the country. This historic rise exemplifies PM Modi’s dedication to cooperative federalism and development-focused governance, supported by strong BJP representation and relentless advocacy for Karnataka,” he asserted.
The pressing question remains: Will the Congress-led government in Karnataka utilize this Rs 63,050 crore for essential infrastructure, irrigation, job creation, and growth, or will it squander the funds on populist handouts and financial mismanagement?
Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticized the Union Budget for 2026–27, likening it to a municipal corporate budget and declaring it the most disappointing budget he has encountered throughout his political career.
“This is the most disappointing budget I have seen in my political career. It is no better than a corporation budget. Karnataka has received nothing. As usual, Karnataka has been betrayed. The entire Southern region has been overlooked in this budget,” Siddaramaiah remarked.
