Bengaluru, Nov 3 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday urged the Congress-led Karnataka government to disclose comprehensive details regarding the proposed Bengaluru tunnel road project, while raising concerns about its feasibility and financial soundness.
Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka accused the state administration of concealing crucial information from the public and ridiculed it for unveiling grand infrastructure initiatives without addressing the ongoing civic challenges faced by the city.
"The Congress government has failed to provide any information to the citizens of Bengaluru about the tunnel road project. They must first respond to the public’s inquiries," Ashoka stated while addressing reporters.
He mentioned that when he sought clarification from officials, he learned that approval from 124 departments was necessary for the project.
"Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that I would be appointed as the chairman of the committee. To demonstrate their capability to implement such a project, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar should first address the potholes on the roads. How can those who struggle to fill potholes attempt to build a tunnel? And where is the funding for it?" Ashoka questioned.
The BJP leader emphasized that his party does not oppose development projects; however, he insisted that the government must first address potholes, waste management, and environmental protection before embarking on such an ambitious initiative.
"They should not speak with arrogance as if the project is guaranteed to proceed. Lalbagh and the Kempegowda Tower should remain unharmed. The environment must not be compromised. Instead of responding to me, the government should provide answers to the public. I am voicing the concerns of the people," Ashoka asserted.
He also mentioned that the BJP remains committed to fostering meaningful development, regardless of which party is in power.
"We are advocating for progress for the people. No matter who becomes Chief Minister, we will continue to demand that they serve the public well. However, within the Congress, there exists both revolution and delusion – their own leaders are acknowledging this," he remarked.
The tunnel project, aimed at linking Hebbal/Esteem Mall (north Bengaluru) to Central Silk Board Junction (south-east Bengaluru), is approximately 18 km long and is projected to cost between Rs 12,690 crore and Rs 17,780 crore in its initial phase.
The proposed route includes multiple entry and exit ramps at key locations, with sections extending up to 120 feet (around 36 meters) below ground. The project aspires to reduce travel time along the corridor from 60-90 minutes to around 20-25 minutes.
The Karnataka Cabinet has granted preliminary approval for the tunnel corridor, and global tenders are anticipated to be issued soon. However, the detailed engineering plan, funding model, and execution timeline are still under consideration.
