Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 12 (NationPress) The Karnataka branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has declared its preparedness for the upcoming Bengaluru civic elections, expressing confidence in achieving victory.
The BJP further indicated that its national leadership would deliberate on a potential alliance with the JD(S) concerning the civic polls.
During a press conference in Bengaluru on Monday, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka addressed inquiries related to the civic elections. Notably, the Supreme Court mandated a deadline of June 30 for the Congress-led government to conduct the Bengaluru civic polls.
Ashoka stated, “The BJP has been persistently urging for elections to take place. We are prepared. Issues such as potholes, fatalities due to potholes, garbage disposal, and the deterioration of law and order will contribute to our victory. The Congress will face defeat in Bengaluru. What more reasons do you need for their downfall? We are ready for the elections.”
He accused the Congress-led administration of failing the residents of Bengaluru. “We are set for the polls. The question of an alliance will be addressed by our national leadership. A new national president will assume office shortly. I met him in Delhi. He will engage with the JD(S), and the coordination committee will reach a decision,” Ashoka mentioned.
Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, affirmed that the BJP is entirely prepared for the Bengaluru civic elections. “The populace is aware of what the Congress leaders have done to Bengaluru. During rains, citizens are compelled to navigate in boats. Potholes remain unfilled. The public recognizes this, and they will entomb the Congress party in those very potholes,” he asserted.
Senior BJP MLA from Bengaluru, S.R. Vishwanath, noted that the Supreme Court has instructed the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to conduct elections by June 30. “The reservation list has been submitted to the court. The BJP has opposed the establishment of the GBA. The segmentation of Bengaluru into five zones is illogical. Despite raising objections regarding ward formations, they were disregarded. Nonetheless, we will secure victory,” he stated.
“According to the court’s orders, the Congress government is obligated to hold the elections. We are prepared. Meetings have already occurred. In spite of conspiracies, the BJP will triumph across all five zones,” Vishwanath added.
The Supreme Court has set a deadline of June 30, 2026, for the election process of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to be finalized.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi directed the State of Karnataka to publish the final ward-wise reservation by February 20, 2026.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the State of Karnataka, informed the court that the notification of reservations would be completed within a month. The bench clarified that no further extensions would be permitted.
