New Delhi, July 11 (NationPress) A seemingly innocuous statement made by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has triggered a flurry of political discussions and speculation. Bhagwat’s assertion that leaders should step down at the age of 75 has elicited pointed reactions from both Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), who interpret it as a covert message directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting a potential rift between the RSS and the BJP.
During a book launch event in Nagpur on Wednesday, honoring late RSS thinker Moropant Pingle, Bhagwat remarked, “When you reach 75, it's time to pause and allow others to take the lead.”
This statement, while seemingly general, garnered immediate attention due to its timing, as both Bhagwat and Prime Minister Modi are set to celebrate their 75th birthdays in September, just six days apart.
The Congress party quickly capitalized on this opportunity. Senior Congress figure Pawan Khera stated that Bhagwat’s comment was “good news,” suggesting it could signal the twilight of the Modi administration.
“Yesterday, Mohan Bhagwat delivered good news. He’s not typically recognized for sharing such news, but he did yesterday,” Khera remarked.
“He stated that after the age of 75, one should give others a chance. This is significant because Bhagwat will reach 75 on September 11, followed by PM Modi on September 17.”
Khera further mused about where PM Modi might have been if he hadn’t pursued a political career. “I often ponder — if PM Narendra Modi wasn't in politics, would he have made it in Bollywood? Thankfully, Bollywood was spared, but unfortunately, the country has not,” he said, criticizing PM Modi’s leadership over the last 11 years.
He added, “The state of the Constitution and democratic institutions — this pair is accountable. Their exit would bring relief to the spirit of India. A wave of joy spread across the nation yesterday with Bhagwat's comment. It’s time to celebrate because brighter days may be on the horizon.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi shared similar sentiments, highlighting the BJP's own retirement age policy.
“In 2014, when the BJP assumed power, they instituted a rule that anyone over 75 would transition to a mentoring role. Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were reassigned to the 'Margdarshak Mandal'. This principle should now extend to all, including PM Modi and Bhagwat,” she told IANS.
Chaturvedi added, “A contradiction is now evident between the BJP and RSS. It seems Bhagwat is reminding everyone that what applies to others also applies to oneself. This message appears directed, subtly hinting at PM Modi.”
Following Bhagwat’s comment, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh chimed in with a sardonic social media post. Alluding to PM Modi’s return from an extensive five-nation tour, Ramesh wrote, “Poor award-seeking Prime Minister! What a welcome home — reminded by the RSS chief that he will turn 75 on September 17.”
Ramesh continued, “But the Prime Minister could also remind Bhagwat that he, too, turns 75 on September 11. One arrow, two targets.”
As of now, neither PM Modi nor any official BJP spokesperson has commented on Bhagwat’s statement or the ensuing political interpretations.
However, back in May 2023, Union Home Minister Amit Shah clarified that there is no retirement clause in the BJP’s constitution.
“Modi ji will continue to lead until 2029. There’s no basis for retirement rumors. The INDIA Bloc will not win the upcoming elections with falsehoods,” he asserted.
