Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) The Amended BharatNet initiative is an impressive $16.9 billion (Rs 139,000 crore) government-funded project aimed at extending OFC fibre and broadband connectivity to every village across the nation, including Andhra Pradesh, as announced by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday.
A memorandum of cooperation (MoC) has been formalized between Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN), the Department of Telecommunications, and the Andhra Pradesh government to ensure the swift rollout of the Amended BharatNet Programme (ABP) in the state.
“Essentially, we are working towards the democratization of technology for every citizen in our nation. The advancements in technology have empowered individuals to showcase their talent, ambition, and aspirations on a global platform,” stated Scindia.
Minister of State Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar remarked that the MoC establishes a structured and sustainable approach for rapid implementation within a state-led model, merging financial backing with accountability.
He emphasized that this collaboration will enhance last-mile connectivity, increase 4G coverage, and ensure rural residents have access to affordable and reliable digital services.
This agreement lays out a comprehensive framework for cooperation between DBN and the state government, facilitating a quicker rollout of the Amended BharatNet Programme.
The state government will provide full support for the expedited implementation, including facilitating Right of Way (RoW), access to infrastructure, and necessary coordination assistance.
According to the ministry, funding for the project will primarily come from DBN, along with contributions from the state government based on mutually agreed terms.
The network developed under the programme will be effectively leveraged by the state government to maximize its socio-economic benefits.
The Centre has approved a financial support package of Rs 2,432 crore for the programme's implementation in Andhra Pradesh.
This initiative is expected to facilitate over five lakh rural home fibre connections with government financial aid, significantly boosting digital governance, enhancing delivery of citizen-centric services, and promoting online education, digital payments, e-governance, and telemedicine across rural and remote regions of the state.
