Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 30 (NationPress) In an alarming incident, the Commissionerate Police apprehended two individuals on Monday for the gangrape of a woman in the Tamando locality of the city during the night between March 27 and 28.
The suspects, identified as Narayana Swain (31) and Bichitra Sahoo (34), hail from Nayagarh district and are reported to work as private ambulance drivers in Bhubaneswar.
According to police sources, the victim, a woman originally from West Bengal, had been living with her husband—a mason—in a rented home in the Chandaka area of Bhubaneswar. She was acquainted with the primary accused, Swain, who often visited a close relative residing nearby.
This prior connection was exploited by Swain, who misused the trust built over time to approach the victim.
On the night in question, after a dispute with her husband, the victim made the decision to return to her home in West Bengal. During this time, she crossed paths with Swain, who offered her a ride to the Bhubaneswar Railway Station.
However, instead of heading to the station, Swain allegedly took her to his rented apartment in the Ranasinghpur area under the jurisdiction of the Tamando police station, where he resided with his roommate, Sahoo. The two men are accused of subjecting the woman to a brutal sexual assault.
Post-incident, they are said to have threatened her, warning her to remain silent about the ordeal out of intimidation.
After managing to escape, the victim filed a complaint with the Tamando police, prompting an investigation that led to the registration of a case (102/26) on March 29.
The police acted swiftly, apprehending both suspects, who were subsequently presented before the court and placed in judicial custody on Monday.
