Mumbai, May 19 (NationPress) Chhagan Bhujbal, a seasoned leader of the NCP and founder of the Samata Parishad, is set to join the council of ministers led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 20.

Bhujbal has confirmed his upcoming role in the ministry. The Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved Bhujbal's entry into the Cabinet, officially notifying him of his oath-taking on Tuesday.

It is anticipated that Bhujbal will oversee the Food and Civil Supply Department, a position he previously held under former Chief Ministers Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde from 2019 to 2024.

The decision for Bhujbal's inclusion in the Cabinet was made unanimously by NCP president Ajit Pawar, working president Praful Patel, and state unit chief Sunil Tatkare.

The NCP recognized the necessity for a strong OBC representation in the Cabinet, especially following the resignation of another OBC leader, Dhananjay Munde, during the budget session in March due to the tragic murder of Beed Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.

Munde was responsible for the Food and Civil Supply Department, which is currently managed by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Bhujbal's appointment is politically significant for the NCP, particularly as the Supreme Court has mandated the state government to initiate local and civic body elections within four months while adhering to OBC reservations prior to the recommendations made by the Banthia committee.

Bhujbal has been a leading figure in advocating for OBC reservation, engaging in a notable conflict with pro-Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange.

Additionally, Bhujbal is a strong proponent of a caste-based census, which has recently received approval from the Centre.

Previously, Bhujbal, a prominent OBC leader, expressed dissatisfaction after being excluded from the Cabinet expansion led by Fadnavis on December 15 of last year. He openly voiced his disappointment over not securing a ministerial position despite his vigorous advocacy for the OBC community during the previous Assembly elections.

Following this, he withdrew from multiple party events, but after interventions from party president Ajit Pawar and working president Praful Patel, he resumed participating in organizational activities.

Moreover, he expressed frustration after being overlooked for nomination twice in the Rajya Sabha elections.

Point of View

The induction of Chhagan Bhujbal into the Maharashtra Cabinet underscores the dynamic political interplay concerning OBC representation. His appointment reflects the NCP's strategy to bolster its influence within the state's governance framework amidst changing political tides. Bhujbal's strong advocacy for OBC issues positions him as a key player in navigating the upcoming electoral landscape.
