Mumbai, May 19 (NationPress) Chhagan Bhujbal, a prominent leader of the NCP and founder of Samata Parishad, is set to join the council of ministers led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 20.
Confirming his new role, Bhujbal has been informed by Fadnavis that he will take the oath on Tuesday.
He is anticipated to oversee the Food and Civil Supply Department, a position he previously held under the administrations of former Chief Ministers Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde between 2019 and 2024.
The decision for Bhujbal’s induction was unanimously made by NCP president Ajit Pawar, working president Praful Patel, and state unit head Sunil Tatkare.
This move comes as the NCP seeks a robust OBC presence in the Cabinet, especially following the resignation of fellow OBC leader Dhananjay Munde during the budget session due to the tragic murder of Santosh Deshmukh, a Beed Sarpanch.
Munde was previously in charge of the Food and Civil Supply Department, which is now temporarily overseen by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Bhujbal's induction holds significant political weight for the NCP, especially as the Supreme Court has directed the state government to finalize local and civic body elections within four months, adhering to OBC reservations prior to the Banthia committee recommendations.
He has been a staunch defender of OBC reservations, engaging in a notable conflict with pro-Maratha activist Manoj Jarange.
In addition, Bhujbal has been an ardent supporter of a caste-based census, which has recently received approval from the Centre.
Despite feeling sidelined after being excluded from the Cabinet expansion last December, he has gradually resumed his party involvement following discussions with Pawar and Patel.
Bhujbal expressed frustration over not securing a nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on two occasions.
