Is the Uproar in Bihar Assembly Over RJD MLA’s Comments on Ram Vilas Paswan Justified?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 17 (NationPress) The 11th day of the Bihar Assembly’s Budget Session commenced with significant unrest and persistent interruptions, as a controversy regarding comments made about the late Ram Vilas Paswan transformed into a substantial political issue.
From the outset of the House proceedings on Tuesday, intense debates flared up between the opposition and the ruling party.
The uproar originated from a prior address by a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA, who reportedly characterized Ram Vilas Paswan as “poor”.
In response, legislators from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and Janata Dal (United) vigorously demanded a public apology from the RJD.
LJP (Ram Vilas) leaders took a confrontational stance on the matter.
The day before, LJP (Ram Vilas) members in the Legislative Council had caused a stir over the comment, and the protests persisted within the Assembly on Tuesday.
LJP (Ram Vilas) MLAs conducted a demonstration inside the Assembly grounds, brandishing signs that declared, “RJD’s identity: insult to Dalits”.
The party contended that the RJD had disrespected a significant leader within the Dalit community.
Reacting to the accusations, RJD MLA Kumar Sarvjeet expressed that Ram Vilas Paswan has served as a source of inspiration for him and asserted that he had previously called for the installation of Paswan’s statue in the Assembly.
He further accused LJP (Ram Vilas) MLA and minister Raju Tiwari of making casteist comments, suggesting that some individuals struggle to accept a Dalit leader’s rise to national prominence.
His comments heightened the tumult within the House.
Meanwhile, RJD MLA Bhai Virendra indicated that the controversy was being intentionally exaggerated to distract from pressing public concerns.
He alleged that the ruling coalition was trying to leverage the situation for political gain.
Owing to the ongoing protests and reciprocal allegations, the Assembly's proceedings were repeatedly interrupted, resulting in a tense atmosphere that lingered for an extended period.
On Monday, the House also experienced multiple disruptions regarding the issue, with LJP (RV) demanding an apology from Tejashwi Yadav.
