Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on 1 September laid foundation stones for development projects worth approximately ₹285 crore in Motihari, East Champaran, spanning urban infrastructure, education, healthcare, sports, and science. The announcement came during the Kisan Samriddhi Conference-cum-Felicitation Ceremony held at Motihari Auditorium, where Choudhary reaffirmed his government's commitment to farmer welfare and rural economic empowerment.

Key Projects Unveiled

The ₹285 crore package includes municipal corporation works worth around ₹78 crore, covering all 46 wards of the city, with approximately ₹1.25 crore approved per ward, according to an official. The foundation stone for a Motihari Planetarium was also laid, aimed at giving school and college students greater exposure to astronomy and space science.

A sports stadium on the campus of MS College, estimated at around ₹30 crore, was among the headline projects. Once operational, it is expected to provide athletes with dedicated training and competition infrastructure. Additionally, foundation stones were laid for a medical college and a Kendriya Vidyalaya at the Home Guard ground near Motihari airport.

Agriculture and Rural Economy at the Centre

Addressing the gathering — attended by several Union ministers, local MPs, intellectuals, labourers, and social workers — Chief Minister Choudhary outlined plans to boost farmers' incomes and energise the rural economy. Key initiatives include the establishment of a new sugar mill in Motihari, strengthening the dairy sector, and developing a Matsya Samriddhi Cluster to support the fisheries value chain.

This comes amid Bihar's broader push to diversify its agricultural base beyond paddy and wheat, with the state government increasingly positioning agro-processing and allied sectors as engines of rural income growth.

Healthcare and Education Push

The proposed medical college in East Champaran is expected to address a longstanding gap in tertiary healthcare infrastructure in the region. The Kendriya Vidyalaya near Motihari airport will expand access to quality school education for students in the district. Notably, East Champaran has historically lagged on key human development indices, making the simultaneous push across health and education sectors significant.
