Patna, Aug 1 (NationPress) Heavy downpours have struck various regions of Bihar on Friday, resulting in significant waterlogging across numerous locations and causing disruptions to daily life.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for severe rain and thunderstorms affecting vast areas of the state, urging residents to venture out only when absolutely necessary.
An orange alert has been declared in 19 districts, including Patna, Gaya, Jamui, Aurangabad, Khagaria, Banka, Vaishali, Samastipur, and Nawada, valid for the next two days.
The situation has already started to worsen in multiple regions, with waterlogging observed in low-lying areas of Patna and other districts since the early hours.
The IMD forecasts strong winds of 30-40 km/h and thunderstorms with lightning accompanying the rainfall.
In regions like Bhagalpur, Saran, Bhojpur, Buxar, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, and Arwal, rainfall amounts may reach between 65 mm and 115.5 mm, potentially leading to increased flood risks and rising river levels.
In Bhagalpur, soil erosion is occurring in several villages adjacent to the Ganga River.
District administrations have issued public safety advisories, urging individuals, particularly those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to stay indoors and keep abreast of weather updates.
“We are implementing all necessary precautions and mobilizing disaster response teams. Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel,” stated a disaster management official in Patna.
Despite the challenges, the ongoing rainfall is seen as a much-needed boon for farmers, as the state has been facing a 39% rainfall deficit this monsoon season.
Bihar has received only 304.9 mm of rain compared to the expected 503.8 mm for this point in the season.
Patna itself has recorded about 20% less rainfall, although the recent downpours are anticipated to bolster sowing and enhance crop health.
Due to a low-pressure system over the region, the rain is expected to persist for the upcoming days, according to the weather office.
