Patna, Aug 8 (NationPress) In a rapid response, Patna police have apprehended two individuals accused of sexually assaulting a Nepalese woman aboard a private bus on August 4.
The suspects, named Kartik Rai and Sunil Kumar, were arrested in different locations after evading capture in the city.
According to Patna Central SP Diksha, the primary suspect, Kartik Rai, was trying to flee to West Bengal when he was apprehended from a train near Barauni.
Authorities recovered the victim’s identification card, a Nepali SIM card, and other personal items from him. Sunil Kumar was later arrested in Aurangabad based on information provided by Kartik.
Police reports indicate that Kartik, a bus driver from Muzaffarpur, is married with a child and speaks Nepali. Sunil Kumar is also married. Kartik allegedly leveraged his understanding of the Nepali language to gain the victim’s trust.
The FIR specifies that Kartik regularly transported security personnel from BMP-1 to Gandhi Maidan and often instructed the victim to wait near Gate No. 5, taking her phone and money.
Shopkeepers and soldiers from the Gorkha Regiment noticed the victim in distress near the gate and alerted Suraj Thapa, president of the Gorkha Samaj Samiti, who assisted her in contacting the police.
The victim revealed to law enforcement that she left her home in Nepal due to coercion from her stepmother and stepbrothers to earn money.
“She arrived in Patna on August 3 via Siliguri, spending the night at Patliputra Junction railway station, where she met Kartik. He promised her employment and took her to Sunil Kumar’s residence, where she was assaulted inside the bus,” stated Diksha.
“Following the attack, the suspects allegedly cleaned the bus to eliminate evidence. Kartik initially fled to Kolkata, selling some of the victim's possessions there, before returning to Muzaffarpur, where he was caught while trying to escape again. The bus has been confiscated by police.
Further investigations are ongoing to ascertain if additional individuals were involved.
Sunil is believed to have assisted Kartik in logistics.
