Bihar lightning strikes kill 4 across Gaya, Saran, Patna districts
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
At least four people were killed and one injured after lightning strikes swept across multiple districts of Bihar on Friday, 29 May, as a sudden and intense weather shift brought heavy rainfall, strong winds, and deadly thunderstorms to the state. The fatalities were reported from Gaya, Saran, and Patna districts.
Farmer Killed in Gaya's Dumaria Block
In Kishun Chak village under the Bhadwar police station area of Dumaria block, Gaya district, a farmer identified as Dinesh Yadav died after being struck by lightning while grazing his buffaloes on Friday morning. He had walked nearly one kilometre from the village to the Hariitar area in Bijua Barwadih when the weather deteriorated rapidly.
Villagers rushed to the spot after learning of the incident but found that Yadav had already succumbed. His wife, two sons, and two daughters — one of whom had recently been married — were left devastated. His wife reportedly collapsed upon seeing his body.
Station House Officer (SHO) Sachin Kumar arrived at the scene with police personnel. 'The police have taken custody of the body and sent it to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Government assistance will be provided to the dependent family under the disaster relief scheme,' the SHO said.
Teen Dies, Mother Injured in Barachatti
A second lightning tragedy struck Gularved village in the Barachatti block of Gaya district, where 17-year-old Manisha Kumari died and her mother, Gauri Devi, sustained severe burn injuries. The two had stepped outside their home when rain began suddenly, and sought shelter beneath a Mahua tree near the village. Lightning struck the tree directly, killing Manisha instantly. Gauri Devi is currently undergoing treatment for her injuries, according to officials.
Deaths Also Reported in Saran and Patna
In Saran district, one person identified as Chandrama Choudhary was killed in a separate lightning strike. A fourth fatality was reported from Patna, though further details were not immediately available. Together, the four deaths underscore the acute risk posed by pre-monsoon electrical storms across Bihar's plains, where open agricultural land and sparse tree cover offer little protection.
Storm Disrupts Sitamarhi; Power Supply Hit
In Sitamarhi district, dark clouds rolled in on Friday afternoon, triggering heavy rainfall and strong winds that toppled trees, damaged electric poles, brought down tin sheds, and disrupted power supply across several localities. The Meteorological Department has forecast continued light to moderate rainfall with strong winds in the district over the coming days. While the showers offered welcome relief from the season's intense heat and humidity, the accompanying storms have left a trail of infrastructure damage and human loss.
