Patna, Jan 19 (NationPress) Criminals seem to operate with impunity in Muzaffarpur district, openly defying police patrols and safety assurances.

In a startling incident on Monday, thieves targeted a man in broad daylight at Pankaj Market, one of the busiest locales under the City police jurisdiction, making off with Rs 1.40 lakh mere meters from a bank.

As per police reports, Uday Kumar Singh, a resident of the Kathaiya police station area, had visited the Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch located in Pankaj Market for personal errands.

After withdrawing Rs 1.40 lakh, he placed the cash inside a bag and exited the bank.

He then paused at a photocopy shop just 50 meters away to make copies of some essential documents.

While Uday Kumar engaged in conversation with the shopkeeper, four criminals, who had allegedly been trailing him, seized the moment.

Using a sharp blade, they swiftly cut the bottom of his bag, extracted the cash, and vanished into the bustling market before the victim realized what had happened.

When Uday Kumar lifted the bag moments later, he felt it unusually light.

Upon inspection, he was horrified to discover the bag slit open and the money gone. Panic ensued in the crowded market area.

After receiving the alert, a team from the City police station hurried to the scene.

Police interrogated the victim and assessed the path from the bank to the photocopy shop.

City SP Mohibullah Ansari confirmed the incident, stating, “Given the severity of the case, a special investigation team has been established. CCTV footage from the bank and adjacent shops is currently under review. Initial investigations indicate the involvement of four suspects. Efforts are also underway to track the criminals through mobile tower data.”

This incident, occurring in the heart of the city and just steps away from a bank, raises significant concerns regarding local law enforcement and public safety.

Residents are questioning how such crimes can take place in a crowded market during daylight hours, undermining police claims of robust security.

The police have vowed to identify and apprehend the offenders swiftly.

Point of View

This incident exemplifies a troubling trend in urban safety. As crime rates rise, it is imperative that law enforcement agencies reassess their strategies and bolster community trust. Only through improved policing can we ensure the safety of citizens in bustling marketplaces.
