New Delhi, July 27 (NationPress) In the latest episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat', Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his accolades to Naveen Kumar, a skilled handloom weaver from Nepura village. This recognition has sparked profound joy among the local community and the wider weaver network.
Naveen Kumar, hailing from Nepura village within the Silav block of Nalanda, has become a prominent figure in the village after PM Modi highlighted his exceptional role in modernizing the handloom sector by embracing innovative technology.
His achievement has motivated fellow villagers to challenge traditional norms and explore similar entrepreneurial paths.
Expressing his gratitude, Naveen remarked, “No leader has directly addressed weavers like this before. We hope our challenges will receive necessary attention now.” He has been engaged in this generational craft since childhood.
“We produce silk shirts, kurtas, saris, and dress materials using handlooms. Previously, we worked with 'pit looms' dug into the earth, but now, thanks to a project funded by the Ministry of Textiles, we have access to advanced frame looms that can be set up on rooftops,” he elaborated.
He added that the weavers' quota has enabled children to enroll in esteemed institutions like NIFT, promising a brighter future for this craft.
“Our collective efforts aim at uplifting the weaver community. Currently, around 70-80 individuals, including children and women, are part of our initiative. We are delighted that PM Modi acknowledged the concerns of weavers and hope for beneficial schemes to be directed towards us,” he stated.
Naveen expressed his exhilaration upon hearing his name during PM Modi’s Mann Ki Baat and noted the happiness it brought to his village.
Addressing business challenges, he mentioned, “Our textiles reach malls in Delhi and Patna via the Upendra Maharathi Craft Research Institute of Bihar. However, since payments are made only post-sale, it hampers our ability to procure materials for future production and manage household expenses.”
Another weaver, Kaluram, conveyed his appreciation to PM Modi for focusing on rural weavers and advocated for the initiation of a pension scheme to safeguard their future.
